According to Nikkei Asia, the Tokyo-based think tank Mitsui & Co. Global Strategic Studies Institute (MGSSI) emphasizes that Chinese automotive and battery manufacturers have surpassed their Japanese and American counterparts in the quality of electric vehicle-related patents. While firms like CATL and BYD hold fewer patents in sheer numbers, they excel in technological influence, evidenced by the high frequency of patent citations and the extended validity of their patents. Consequently, Chinese automakers are poised to address US tariff threats by leveraging technology licensing, thus circumventing the need for new factory construction and generating patent royalties.
