U.S. Secretary of Commerce Lutnick has asserted that the European Union (EU) must overhaul its digital regulations to pave the way for an agreement on reducing tariffs on steel and aluminum. The United States is currently engaged in discussions with the EU regarding the relaxation of its technology industry regulations. In return, the U.S. is prepared to propose a beneficial steel and aluminum agreement.
Lutnick, accompanied by U.S. Trade Representative Greer, embarked on their first official visit to Brussels since concluding a trade agreement with the EU in July. Lutnick unequivocally stated that the success of any steel or aluminum deal hinges on the EU's willingness to ease certain regulations targeting major U.S. tech firms. The duo held consultations with the EU's technology chief on this matter, followed by a luncheon with the EU's trade minister.
Lutnick emphasized that if the EU were to loosen its regulatory framework and foster a business-friendly environment for U.S. companies, it could potentially reap the benefits of hundreds of billions, or even trillions, of dollars in investment.
