Linus Torvalds has incorporated the initial set of code modifications aimed at discontinuing support for Intel 486 (i486) CPUs within the primary Linux kernel. This alteration will be effective from the release of Linux version 7.1. Earlier this month, Phoronix had already reported that Linux 7.1 was slated to commence the gradual elimination of support for i486, and now, this strategy has been formally put into action. This move was spearheaded by seasoned developer Ingo Molnar, who submitted patches that eliminated Kconfig build options, including CONFIG_M486SX, CONFIG_M486, and CONFIG_MELAN. Linus Torvalds, widely recognized as the founder of Linux, articulated that there is no longer a compelling rationale to sustain support for the 486 architecture, as it could potentially impede the optimization efforts for the x86 architecture.
