On January 18, during a televised news conference on Sunday, the spokesperson for South Korea's Presidential Office announced that South Korea would endeavor to secure more advantageous tariff conditions from the United States for imported memory chips. When questioned about the Trump administration's declaration of imposing tariffs on artificial intelligence chips, the official pointed out that the joint fact sheet on the trade agreement between South Korea and the United States, released the previous year, already encompassed pertinent clauses. These clauses were designed to guarantee that South Korea would not find itself in a less favorable position compared to its primary competitors when confronted with US tariffs on imported chips. Furthermore, on Saturday, South Korea's Trade Minister also remarked that the US tariffs on certain high-end computing chips would exert only a limited impact on South Korean enterprises.
