On February 25, 2026, David Luan, head of Amazon's Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Lab, announced on LinkedIn that he will leave his position by the end of this week to 'incubate new projects.' Luan was appointed to lead Amazon's San Francisco-based AGI Lab in December 2024, which focuses on long-term research, including the development of practical AI agents. Previously, in June 2024, Amazon poached Luan and his team from AI startup Adept through an 'acqui-hire' and secured partial technology licensing. Luan's departure comes after Amazon's major restructuring of its AGI division late last year, with the reorganized unit now led by Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of the Cloud Computing Division.
