On May 6, Reuters broke the news that RJ Scaringe, the CEO of Rivian, an American electric vehicle producer, disclosed that the company is contemplating the in-house production of LiDAR sensors and might team up with Chinese companies to facilitate this endeavor. As part of its overarching strategy to cultivate its proprietary autonomous driving technology, Rivian embarked on a plan to create its own chips last year. The upcoming R2 model, slated for release later this year, will come fitted with LiDAR sensors. Scaringe noted that the company won't directly purchase from China; instead, it's considering leveraging Chinese technology for production within the United States, possibly by forming a joint venture.
