On September 3 (local time), trinamiX, a subsidiary of BASF, initiated legal proceedings against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The lawsuit alleges that the Face ID technology employed in Apple's iPhone 15 to 17 series, iPad Pro, and other devices infringes upon seven of trinamiX's patents related to facial authentication. trinamiX asserts that the technology at the heart of the dispute stems from BASF's 2010 research into organic solar cells. This research was later advanced by trinamiX, with a primary focus on skin material recognition to thwart attempts at deception using photos and 3D masks. trinamiX is seeking compensation from Apple and a cessation of any ongoing infringement, although the exact amount of compensation sought has not been made public.
