BASF’s wholly-owned subsidiary, trinamiX, has initiated a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple in the Midland Division of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The complaint alleges that various iPhone, iPad, and other Apple products infringe upon seven patents associated with facial authentication technology through their Face ID feature. The crux of the lawsuit centers on the materials and skin detection capabilities utilized in Face ID. BASF has petitioned the court to issue an injunction preventing Apple from any further infringement but has not specified the exact amount of damages being sought. trinamiX’s technology traces back to a serendipitous discovery made by BASF scientists in 2010. The company was officially established in 2014 and, as of now, possesses over 800 patents that are either authorized or pending worldwide.
