Almost ten years after the iPhone X first introduced Face ID technology, BASF initiated legal proceedings against Apple. On September 3, 2026, BASF lodged a patent infringement lawsuit with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The lawsuit alleges that Apple has infringed upon seven facial authentication patents through its iPhone 15 to 17 series, iPad Pro, and other related products. BASF is seeking compensation for the alleged infringement and a court order to halt such practices.
