The Hide My Email feature in iCloud+ offered by Apple empowers users to create random email addresses. Emails sent to these addresses are then forwarded to the user's actual inbox, thus safeguarding user privacy. However, this feature does not offer complete protection when potential legal issues come to the fore. In March 2026, the FBI director's girlfriend received a death threat via email, with the sender utilizing Apple's Hide My Email feature. In response to a law enforcement request, Apple promptly furnished the real iCloud account information associated with the anonymous email, encompassing the user's name and registered email address. The user had generated as many as 134 anonymous email addresses, yet was ultimately tracked down by law enforcement. Apple's terms of service explicitly state that in cases involving death threats or serious bodily harm, the company will collaborate with law enforcement to provide user information. Hence, while the Hide My Email feature can effectively shield user privacy under normal circumstances, its anonymity may not withstand legal scrutiny.
