The hacker collective ShinyHunters has asserted that it has infiltrated multiple systems within the FBI, making off with a substantial volume of personal data. This includes details pertaining to FBI agents, both current and former employees, as well as job applicants. The group has stated that this cyber intrusion was a retaliatory move in response to the FBI's announcement of false accusations in May 2026. They emphasized that their actions were not financially motivated and demanded that the FBI rectify or retract the relevant announcement. ShinyHunters claimed to have capitalized on a zero-day vulnerability within Oracle PeopleSoft, leveraging it to execute remote code and tamper with pages on the FBI's recruitment website. Following this initial breach, they maneuvered laterally to gain access to the FBI's servers hosted on Amazon AWS GovCloud, where they proceeded to download an estimated 2TB to 3TB of data related to individuals. The stolen data samples encompass sensitive information such as names, addresses, and social security numbers. While some of the information has been verified through comparative analysis, it remains uncertain whether all the data originated exclusively from the FBI's internal systems. At present, the FBI is actively investigating these unauthorized activities. Consequently, its recruitment website and agent application portal have been temporarily taken offline. ShinyHunters, a notorious cybercrime group that has been active in recent years, has exploited similar vulnerabilities to launch attacks on multiple organizations, including the renowned gaming platform Rockstar Games.
