In the midst of escalating global 5G competition, Japanese electronics giant Kyocera has made the decision to halt its research and development (R&D) efforts on 5G wireless base stations. This move deals a direct setback to Japan's ambition of localizing its mobile communication infrastructure. At present, the global 5G base station market is predominantly controlled by Huawei, Ericsson, and Nokia, collectively commanding nearly 80% of the market share. In stark contrast, the combined market share of Japanese companies, including NEC, stands at less than 2%. In light of economic security concerns, there has been a persistent push within Japan to boost the localization rate of base stations.
