On April 24, reports surfaced indicating that a general mobilization rally organized by the union of Samsung Electronics on the 23rd resulted in a dramatic drop of over 18% in the company's semiconductor output within a single day. The union's 'United Struggle Headquarters' unveiled data on the output decline and urged management to allocate 15% of operating profits as performance bonuses. Failing this, they warned of initiating an 18-day general strike next month, which would significantly disrupt production. On the 24th, the union announced that due to the rally, which drew around 40,000 members the day before, the night shift output at memory chip factories plummeted by 18.4%, while foundry factory output experienced an even more severe decline of 58.1%. The union had earlier projected that production losses during the general strike could surpass KRW 30 trillion. With Samsung Electronics' anticipated operating profit for the year hovering around KRW 300 trillion, fulfilling the union's demand would necessitate distributing approximately KRW 45 trillion in performance bonuses. Should management refuse to meet these demands, the union intends to strike from May 21 to June 7 and plans to rally operators of 'safety protection facilities' to amplify the strike's impact on production.
