On April 15, 2026, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, took to the social platform X to make a significant announcement: Tesla has achieved a major milestone by completing the tape-out of its cutting-edge AI5 chip, specifically designed for autonomous driving. This new chip boasts an impressive computing power of nearly 2,500 tera-operations per second (TOPS) per unit, and its single-chip memory capacity has soared to 144GB. In terms of performance, it stands shoulder to shoulder with NVIDIA's Hopper architecture, and when two chips work in tandem, they can even compete with the formidable Blackwell processor. The AI5 chip is a product of a dual-track foundry strategy, with both TSMC and Samsung playing pivotal roles in its manufacturing. Mass production of this chip is slated for late 2026 to early 2027. Once produced, the AI5 chip will find its application across a diverse range of scenarios, encompassing Tesla's vehicles, humanoid robots, and data centers. Furthermore, Musk dropped a hint about Tesla's future endeavors, revealing that chips like the AI6 and Dojo3 are currently in the pipeline, under active development.
