On December 24, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo reported that memory giants like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have decided to raise the prices of HBM3E for the upcoming year by nearly 20%. Usually, ahead of the launch of a new generation of HBM products, suppliers tend to slash the prices of the preceding generation. Such a price increase is, therefore, quite unusual.
The price surge stems from a blend of supply and demand dynamics. On the supply front, memory producers foresee a spike in demand for the sixth-generation HBM (HBM4) next year and are ramping up their capacity investments. This has resulted in a backlog of HBM3E production capacity. On the demand side, apart from NVIDIA, tech behemoths like Google and Amazon have also substantially boosted their order volumes.
