On Friday, South Korea's defense and aerospace behemoth, Hanwha Group, unveiled its ambitious plan to invest a staggering 55 trillion won (equivalent to roughly US$35.6 billion) in the aerospace and AI sectors by 2040. This strategic move aims to propel the development of launch vehicles, satellites, and AI data centers. Hanwha Aerospace, a key entity within the group, will allocate approximately 23 trillion won to the advancement of launch vehicles and testing facilities. Additionally, it will earmark 20 trillion won for the development of SAR satellites, space-based AI data centers, and low-Earth orbit satellite communication networks. Meanwhile, its subsidiary, Hanwha Systems, has set its sights on launching 64 SAR satellites by 2031 and constructing a space-based AI data center. As an initial step, Hanwha will establish a defense AI data center in Changwon City. This center is slated to commence operations this year, boasting an initial capacity of 45 megawatts, and will scale up to 135 megawatts by 2032.
