On May 19, reports indicated that the global rollout of AI data centers is gathering momentum, with the market's attention shifting from chips to the optical fiber industry. Optical fiber, a crucial element enabling high-speed server interconnections, is now experiencing a supply crunch. Propelled by the construction of AI data centers, the worldwide demand for optical fiber has skyrocketed, with major Chinese optical fiber manufacturers already having their orders filled until early 2027. Data reveals that while data centers accounted for a mere less than 5% of the global optical fiber demand in 2024, this proportion is projected to soar to 30% by 2027. Since the start of this year, numerous U.S. tech behemoths have commenced their foray into the optical fiber sector, preemptively securing production capacity through multi-year supply contracts. In January, Meta inked a multi-year deal worth $6 billion with Corning to secure a steady supply of optical fiber, cables, and connectivity products for its AI data centers. In May, NVIDIA also forged a partnership with Corning.
