At present, there is a growing concern that artificial intelligence (AI) might spark an employment crisis. Andrej Karpathy, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, harnessed the power of AI to evaluate how susceptible different occupations in the United States are to technological upheaval. His findings revealed that high-paying jobs are the most significantly impacted.

Drawing on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Karpathy published a chart that assigned risk scores, ranging from 0 to 10, to each occupation. The results indicated that the weighted average score for the impact of AI on various occupations across the United States stands at 4.9 points. Notably, occupations with annual incomes surpassing $100,000 boasted an average risk score of 6.7 points. In contrast, those earning less than $35,000 had a significantly lower score of merely 3.4 points.

This chart swiftly garnered widespread attention, prompting many to foresee a gloomy future for white-collar professions. However, Karpathy promptly removed the data from public view, asserting that it had been misconstrued. Nevertheless, the archived information from the chart resonates with industry viewpoints. For instance, software development engineers were assigned a high-risk score of 9 points, whereas construction workers received a mere 1 point, and home care assistants scored 2 points. These findings are akin to the conclusions drawn in an Anthropic report.
