On Tuesday, sources close to the matter revealed that following discussions with the Pentagon concerning the future direction of artificial intelligence lab Anthropic, the company firmly stated that it would not loosen its restrictions on military applications. The CEO of Anthropic held a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Defense in an effort to settle a long-standing controversy. However, Anthropic stood its ground, refusing to lift the safeguards that prohibit the technology from being utilized in autonomous targeting weapons and for domestic surveillance purposes within the United States. Pentagon officials, on the other hand, maintain that such use is permissible provided the government adheres to U.S. law.

During the meeting, the Secretary of Defense presented Anthropic with an ultimatum, demanding a response by Friday. Failure to comply would result in Anthropic being classified as a supply chain risk enterprise, or the government might resort to legal measures to compel the company to revise its policies.
