Microsoft has undertaken a significant reorganization of its central Windows engineering unit, consolidating it into a unified organizational framework. This move represents the first substantial restructuring of the Windows division since Pavan Davuluri assumed the role of president of the Windows and Devices Group.

Post-restructuring, the leader of the Windows team will directly report to Davuluri, with the majority of engineering tasks being overseen by a single department head in a streamlined manner. Historically, the Windows business underwent a division in 2018. Although there was a partial reintegration of teams in 2020, the core engineering and software release teams continued to operate independently. Presently, while certain fundamental components of Windows are still overseen by the Azure team, the primary Windows operations have been centralized under a singular leadership.

This reorganization has bestowed Davuluri with increased responsibilities, aligning with Microsoft's ambition to evolve Windows into an 'operating system driven by intelligent agents.' In line with this vision, Microsoft has recently initiated several AI-centric projects and rolled out a suite of AI-powered features for Windows 11.
