On April 16, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially unveiled the mandatory national standard titled "Safety Requirements for Traction Batteries for Electric Vehicles" (GB38031-2025). This standard, a global first, mandates that batteries must not ignite or explode following thermal runaway caused by internal short circuits. In response, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) emphasized that achieving this objective necessitates the concerted efforts of both automakers and battery manufacturers. Notably, CATL had anticipated this requirement, having introduced and mass-produced batteries equipped with the first-generation Non-Propagating (NP) technology as early as 2020. This pioneering technology ensures that batteries do not combust or explode in the event of thermal runaway, thereby meeting safety standards six years ahead of the new national regulation. Currently, CATL is actively advancing the iterative development of NP technology, including the introduction of NP2.0, which facilitates active isolation of high voltage and smoke, and NP3.0, which promises "smoke-free thermal runaway."
