Amazon's autonomous driving company Zoox has announced a recall of 105 autonomous taxis to address a software defect where the vehicle's perception system fails to detect heavy smoke and may drive into smoke-covered areas. Zoox filed a recall report with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on July 8, stating that the flaw was exposed in an incident last month in Las Vegas where an unoccupied driverless vehicle drove into a fire smoke zone. The vehicle in the incident applied emergency braking and came to a stop without causing any injuries. Zoox has completed its investigation, confirming that this was the only incident of its kind, and has enhanced the vehicle's detection and response capabilities to heavy smoke through a software update.
