On May 6, reports surfaced indicating that Honda has opted to indefinitely suspend its plans for building a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Canada. This decision comes in response to the sluggish demand for EVs in the United States. Honda intends to cease EV production in the North American market by 2026, redirecting its strategic focus towards hybrid vehicles (HVs) in the region. Consequently, the construction of the proposed EV factory and battery plant in Ontario has been put on hold. Originally unveiled in April 2024, the project anticipated production commencement as early as 2028, though this timeline was subsequently delayed to around 2030 due to the EV market's failure to meet projections. In light of the challenges in swiftly improving market conditions, Honda has chosen to suspend the project and is now engaging in discussions with the Canadian government. Furthermore, the company will keep the option open to reconsider the project in the future, contingent upon any policy shifts in North America.
