Tesla has reached a significant milestone in its pursuit of "safe unsupervised driving," a goal championed by CEO Elon Musk. According to the company’s official safety page, the cumulative mileage covered by its fleet utilizing FSD (Supervised) has now exceeded 10 billion miles. This benchmark was established by Musk earlier this year as a prerequisite for enabling unsupervised autonomous driving capabilities. However, despite reaching this impressive data milestone, Tesla has yet to activate its L4 fully autonomous driving feature.

Musk has revised the timeline for achieving full autonomy on multiple occasions, emphasizing that approximately 10 billion miles of real-world driving data are necessary to ensure the system’s reliability. While Tesla reports that the accident rate under its FSD system is more than 40% lower than that of human-driven vehicles, industry experts have expressed skepticism regarding the methodology behind these safety statistics.
