During Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk revealed that the Optimus robot will enter production at the Fremont factory by late July or August. In a concurrent move, production of the Model S and Model X will cease in early May, and after a four-month transition period, their existing assembly lines will be retooled for Optimus production. Musk noted that given Optimus involves an entirely new manufacturing process and 10,000 unique components, initial production will be "quite slow" and challenging to forecast. The swift reconfiguration of the entire production line is uncommon, as it requires dismantling the current setup and installing entirely new equipment. Musk refrained from specifying Optimus production targets for 2026, mentioning only that the robot will initially acquire basic skills within the factory environment. Additionally, a second Optimus production facility is currently under construction at Giga Texas, with manufacturing expected to commence around summer 2027. The launch of the third-generation Optimus has been delayed until "mid-year" to minimize the risk of competitors replicating its design.
