On April 20 (local time), Toyota unveiled a strategic partnership with CATL aimed at bolstering their electric vehicle endeavors in Indonesia. As part of this collaboration, Toyota is set to invest IDR 1.3 trillion (equivalent to roughly RMB 515 million) to establish a dedicated production line at CATL's battery manufacturing facility in West Java, Indonesia. This move is geared towards sourcing batteries for hybrid vehicles produced locally.

The plant is slated to kick off operations by the close of 2026, boasting an impressive annual production capacity of 6.9 gigawatt-hours. Previously, Toyota relied on importing components from abroad. However, it will now harness core components crafted locally by CATL in Indonesia, with intentions to procure ternary lithium batteries utilizing nickel materials. This signifies Toyota's inaugural foray into procuring batteries from CATL beyond the Chinese market.

Toyota commands a 30% stake in Indonesia's nascent vehicle market and has ambitious plans to churn out approximately 500,000 vehicles by 2025. Furthermore, in 2025, a slew of companies, including CATL, declared their investments in pertinent projects across Indonesia, with the total anticipated investment amounting to USD 5.9 billion (around RMB 40.335 billion).
