The EU's new battery regulations are set to come into force next year. By then, most consumer electronic devices will be required to facilitate easy battery removal and replacement. In light of this, Nintendo has announced plans to launch an upgraded version of the Switch 2 in the EU. Previously, US officials voiced concerns that these regulations would unduly restrict Meta's smart glasses. In response, the European Commission has revised the regulations to exempt certain compact wearable devices, including smartwatches and smart glasses. This exemption is grounded in the consideration that the inclusion of removable batteries might compromise the safety, durability, and water resistance of these devices. Moreover, some products are too diminutive to permit safe battery replacement, necessitating sealed designs. The amended regulations are still subject to review by the European Parliament and the EU Council. The EU has underscored that this adjustment is the outcome of thorough consultations, rather than a response to US pressure, with the exemption intended to uphold product safety standards.
