On February 9, 2026, tech media outlets reported that Google has globally implemented a paywall for the lyrics feature on YouTube Music. Under this new policy, free users are now restricted to just five views of the lyrics, and they will receive warnings indicating the number of remaining views. Once this limit is reached, only the initial few lines of lyrics will be visible in the playback interface, with the remainder being blurred out. Google clarified that this is merely a test phase and that no definitive decision has been made yet. Currently, the monthly subscription fee for both YouTube Video and Music stands at $13.99, whereas opting for YouTube Music alone costs $10.99 per month. It's worth noting that in 2024, music streaming behemoth Spotify also attempted to limit user access to lyrics but eventually reversed this decision following significant user outcry.
