On December 23, the European Commission commended Apple for the new interoperability enhancements in its iOS 26.3 system (note: it's likely a typo in the original text, it should probably be a later version like iOS 26.3 instead of iOS 6.3 considering the context), noting that these changes align with the requirements set forth by the Digital Markets Act. This act stipulates that Apple is required to extend the same functionalities and device permissions to third-party accessories that it provides for its own products.

Under iOS 26.3, wearable device manufacturers operating within the EU can now trial proximity pairing and optimized notification capabilities. The proximity pairing feature simplifies the connection process for accessories such as headphones. When placed in close proximity to an iPhone or iPad, these accessories can pair with a single tap, streamlining what was previously a multi-step process. The optimized notification feature, on the other hand, allows third-party accessories like smartwatches to receive notifications from iPhones. This enables users to view and interact with these notifications, a functionality that was previously exclusive to the Apple Watch.

The European Commission has indicated that developers can seize this opportunity to test third-party TVs, smartwatches, and headphone products. These features are anticipated to be fully implemented across Europe by 2026. The iOS 26.3 system is slated for an official release by the end of January, with the new features being made available exclusively to device manufacturers and iPhone and iPad users in the EU region.
