Apple's latest Mac mini and Mac Studio desktop computers commenced shipping on Tuesday. The tech giant is actively marketing these two new devices to enterprises, emphasizing their capabilities as local AI machines that bypass the need for token-based cloud service fees. Apple has highlighted that a cluster of four such devices, interconnected via Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA technology, is capable of running trillion-parameter AI models while drawing power from just a single outlet. The distributed AI inference speed achieved by this setup can be up to three times faster than that of a single machine. Moreover, the AI models developed can be seamlessly adapted for use on iPhones and iPads. In terms of pricing, the base model of the M6 Mac mini is priced at $899, reflecting a $100 increase over its predecessor due to escalating memory costs. The entry-level M5 Ultra Mac Studio starts at $5,499, with the top-tier configuration reaching prices as high as $20,000. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio, equipped with 512GB of unified memory, is anticipated to begin shipping by the end of October. Currently, Apple commands a market share of approximately 4.6% in the enterprise desktop and laptop segment, a figure that pales in comparison to Windows' dominant 91.3% share. In response to this competitive landscape, Microsoft is forging partnerships with chip manufacturers to deploy on-device AI capabilities. Meanwhile, companies like Nvidia are also venturing into the market with their own AI desktop offerings.
