Microsoft has made an official announcement stating that Windows Server 2025 will mark the end of support for WINS (Windows Internet Name Service). Future releases of the system will entirely eliminate this service. Initially launched in 1994 to facilitate NetBIOS name resolution, WINS has experienced a substantial decrease in utilization. This decline can be attributed to the widespread embrace of DNS, the advocacy for IPv6, and growing security apprehensions. Consequently, WINS is now regarded as an outdated technology. Microsoft advises enterprises to promptly transition to contemporary DNS-based name resolution solutions, thereby circumventing potential compatibility issues during future upgrades. It's worth noting that WINS will retain its support status in Server 2025 until November 2034.
