On April 23, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company intends to allocate around $3 billion for the construction of a chip research and development (R&D) plant in Texas. This move represents one of Tesla's initial steps towards establishing substantial chip manufacturing capabilities. The new facility will be situated within the expansive Tesla Texas Gigafactory complex. Initially, it will produce a modest monthly output of just a few thousand chips, primarily functioning as an experimental hub for testing cutting-edge technologies and manufacturing processes. SpaceX will take the helm during the project's nascent stages, dubbed Terafab, while Intel has been engaged to offer specialized assistance in chip design, production, and packaging.
