Japan Greenlights Extra 631.5 Billion Yen Subsidy for Rapidus to Venture into AI Chip Production

On April 11, news emerged that the Japanese government has given the nod to an additional subsidy of 631.5 billion yen (roughly equivalent to US$4 billion) for Rapidus. This financial support is aimed at bolstering Rapidus's foray into the realm of artificial intelligence chip production. The allocated funds are set to underwrite Rapidus's operations on behalf of Fujitsu.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on Saturday that, with this extra funding, the government's cumulative expenditures and investments in this startup for the current fiscal year (spanning until March 2027) will amount to 2.6 trillion yen (around US$16.3 billion). The ministry further revealed that an external committee has conducted an inspection of Rapidus's wafer fabrication plant situated in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Following the inspection, the committee acknowledged the technological strides made by the plant.

The newly - founded chip manufacturer, Rapidus, embarked on wafer development utilizing 2 - nanometer technology last year. It has laid out plans to commence mass - production of state - of - the - art semiconductors by 2027, with the overarching goal of diminishing Japan's dependence on industry - leading companies like TSMC.
