Arch Linux has recently made adjustments to its default configuration for NVIDIA graphics drivers. Specifically, the closed-source driver version available in its official repositories has been upgraded to the 590 branch. As a consequence of this change, NVIDIA GPUs based on the Pascal architecture, as well as those from earlier generations, are no longer supported by this default driver branch. This primarily impacts the GeForce GTX 10 series and preceding models. Users affected by this change will need to manually switch to an older proprietary driver branch to ensure continued driver support. The specific steps involve uninstalling the official nvidia, nvidia-lts, or nvidia-dkms packages and then installing nvidia-580xx-dkms from the Arch User Repository (AUR). On the other hand, users with GPUs based on the Turing architecture or newer models will seamlessly transition to open-source kernel modules during system upgrades, without the need for any manual intervention.
