On October 18, the AXIOS website reported that Nvidia and TSMC are set to jointly announce on Friday their successful production of the first wafer in the United States. This wafer will be instrumental in crafting Blackwell chips for the artificial intelligence industry. This milestone is a testament to the Trump administration's commitment to fostering AI technology development in the U.S. and represents a pivotal leap in the global race for AI supremacy.
On Friday, Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, toured TSMC's semiconductor manufacturing plant in Phoenix, where he unveiled this significant advancement. Nvidia highlighted its ongoing collaboration with TSMC to establish U.S.-based infrastructure capable of supporting global AI factories. The joint announcement also underscored that TSMC's Arizona facility is poised to generate thousands of high-tech jobs and foster a diverse supplier ecosystem.
While this wafer signifies a major stride in returning critical chip production to American soil, the U.S. still faces a considerable journey before it can entirely wean itself off reliance on overseas companies and factories for its chip requirements.
