In a recent showdown for AI expertise, Google has emerged victorious over OpenAI, shelling out $2.4 billion to acquire the technology license of the popular AI programming startup Windsurf. As part of the deal, Google has welcomed Windsurf's CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and a select group of employees into its DeepMind team, while allowing Windsurf to continue operating independently. This bold move by Google has effectively scuttled OpenAI's months-long acquisition negotiations, which had envisioned Windsurf joining its ranks for $3 billion to bolster its presence in the AI programming tools market. The collapse of the OpenAI-Windsurf deal is partially attributed to the strained relationship between OpenAI and its major investor Microsoft, as well as Windsurf's apprehension about the potential transfer of its intellectual property to Microsoft.
