On October 2, The Information reported, citing sources with inside knowledge and a statement from SoftBank, that both NVIDIA and SoftBank have finalized their investments in OpenAI's previous funding round, with each contributing a substantial $10 billion. This brings their total investment commitments to $30 billion each. Earlier in March, OpenAI announced that it had secured investment commitments totaling $122 billion for this funding phase, with a post-money valuation soaring to $852 billion. Notably, Amazon pledged up to $50 billion and completed its full investment in July.
With the previous funding round now concluded, OpenAI appears to be gearing up for its next private funding initiative, aiming to raise around $30 billion, which could potentially elevate its valuation to approximately $1.4 trillion. SoftBank revealed that following this latest investment, its cumulative investment in OpenAI has reached $64.6 billion, granting it an approximate 13% stake in the company. A portion of the funds for this investment was sourced from SoftBank's $11.1 billion high-yield bond issuance, which was successfully completed in late September.
