OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, has indicated that despite securing the largest private funding round ever, the company might still pursue additional capital to keep pace with the skyrocketing demand for computing power spurred by AI advancements. The recent funding haul of $122 billion has given OpenAI substantial financial leeway, and the decision to raise more funds in the future will hinge on factors such as demand, revenue growth, cash flow, and the existing computing power deficit. Friar believes that the public market could emerge as an appealing funding avenue down the line. This situation underscores a fundamental conflict within the AI boom: while there's a swift surge in product demand, the necessary infrastructure to sustain this growth remains both scarce and costly.
Friar also disclosed that ChatGPT boasts over 900 million weekly active users, while Codex has amassed more than 4 million users. She emphasized that computing power constitutes a significant competitive edge, noting that the enterprise sales team is inundated with work and that banks are giving priority to adopting its cybersecurity models. When questioned about OpenAI's relationship with Apple and the possibility of legal action, Friar expressed a desire for seamless collaboration but refrained from commenting on the ongoing lawsuit.
