On Wednesday (local time), Google Cloud took the wraps off its latest technological marvels—including the eighth-generation TPU—at the 2026 Next conference. The eighth-gen TPU comes in two variants: TPU 8t, tailored for AI model training, and TPU 8i, optimized for inference tasks. Notably, the TPU 8i features a hierarchical Boardfly network topology. Projections indicate that the OCS market will soar to around $400 million by 2025, with Google emerging as the market leader. By 2029, the market is expected to balloon to over $2.5 billion, boasting a compound annual growth rate of 58%. This conference is poised to further expand the demand landscape for OCS. Among the listed companies in this domain, Tencent King Technology stands out as the primary supplier of large-sized pure YVO4 crystals for liquid crystal OCS optical switches, currently enjoying a robust order book. Meanwhile, GLOphotonics showcased its Calient OCS product in collaboration with partners at the OFC exhibition in March 2026.
