Encyclopædia Britannica and its subsidiary, Merriam-Webster, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in Manhattan federal court, accusing it of unauthorized use of online articles, encyclopedia entries, and dictionary entries to train ChatGPT, resulting in a diversion of traffic from the Encyclopædia Britannica website. Encyclopædia Britannica claims that OpenAI illegally copied nearly 100,000 articles for training purposes, and that the content generated by ChatGPT is nearly verbatim to the encyclopedia entries. Additionally, Encyclopædia Britannica has accused OpenAI of trademark infringement, suggesting that it has obtained authorization for replication and improperly citing sources in AI-generated content. Encyclopædia Britannica is seeking financial compensation and has requested the court to issue an injunction to halt the infringing activities.
