According to senior U.S. Department of Defense officials, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is set to meet with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon on Tuesday to discuss the terms for the military's use of the company's artificial intelligence models. Recently, negotiations between the two sides have reached an impasse, primarily over the terms of technology use, particularly restrictions on the use of AI models in the development of autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. Anthropic insists on prohibiting its technology from being used for large-scale surveillance of the American public and the development of fully autonomous weapons, while the Department of Defense demands the removal of these restrictions to allow the military to use the models for all lawful purposes.
