At the India AI Impact Summit, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, addressed external skepticism (replacing "question (translated as 'doubts')" for clarity) regarding the resource consumption of artificial intelligence. He unequivocally stated that concerns about water usage in data centers are "unfounded" and clarified that the evaporative cooling technology once employed in early data centers—a technology that has been phased out for years—is no longer in use. Altman acknowledged that the overall energy consumption resulting from the global large-scale deployment of AI is indeed a matter worthy of attention. However, he emphasized that one should not solely focus on the energy consumption of a single query. Instead, he suggested broadening the perspective to consider the overall energy structure. He argued that the world needs to expedite its transition to clean energy sources, such as nuclear, wind, and solar power.
Altman also drew a parallel with human development, noting that it takes approximately 20 years for a person to acquire professional knowledge from birth. During this period, humans consume substantial amounts of food and energy. In contrast, AI may already be approaching human-level energy efficiency.
