On October 24, 2025, OpenAI made public its acquisition of the AI startup Software Applications. Established in 2023 by a group of ex-Apple staffers, the startup focuses on crafting AI-powered user interfaces tailored for the Mac platform. Its flagship product is the AI assistant, Sky. This assistant boasts a floating, interactive design, adept at comprehending on-screen content and activating applications to carry out tasks like writing, coding, and schedule organization. Presently, Sky remains in the beta-testing phase and has not been rolled out to the general public. The financial terms of the acquisition were kept under wraps, but OpenAI has outlined plans to weave Software Applications' technology into ChatGPT and onboard its 12-member team. Prior to this, Software Applications had successfully raised $6.5 million in seed capital, with backers such as OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, and Figma's CEO, Dylan Field.
