By July 2025, ChatGPT had amassed over 700 million weekly active users. This number represents roughly one-tenth of the world's adult population, and an astonishing 18 billion messages are exchanged on the platform every week. OpenAI, in partnership with Harvard University and Duke University, published a report. The report is grounded in a sample of more than 1.5 million real-world conversations from the consumer version of ChatGPT, collected between May 2024 and June 2025.
The report reveals that users mainly turn to ChatGPT for processing existing content. Processing scenarios make up two-thirds of the writing-related tasks on the platform. When it comes to user motivations, they can be broadly grouped into three categories: inquiry, operation, and expression. Among these, inquiry is the most common motivation. However, in work-related contexts, operation-based motivations take the lead.
In terms of demographics, female users account for 52% of the total user base. Users under the age of 26 are responsible for nearly half of all the messages sent. Moreover, user growth is occurring at a faster pace in low- and middle-income countries.
