On Thursday, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared the conclusion of its 2022 preliminary assessment concerning unintended deceleration problems in 695,000 Tesla vehicles. The NHTSA is of the opinion that the actual risk this issue poses to drivers is minimal, and there has been a notable decrease in the occurrence rate of related incidents. The investigation mainly focused on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. In early 2022, Tesla rolled out a software update to tackle this issue. As per the NHTSA, the number of accident reports has seen a dramatic decline, plummeting from 300 at the start of the investigation to 45 in 2024, 19 in 2025, and a mere 3 up to now in 2026. The NHTSA pointed out that the scenarios reported in these cases did not lead to any alterations in the vehicle's lateral position or a substantial reduction in the distance to the vehicles behind, which could have potentially caused collisions.
