In July 2026, Samsung officially rolled out its entry-level M.2 NVMe solid-state drive, the Samsung 990. This new SSD employs a PCIe 4.0×4 interface and QLC NAND flash memory. It is designed with a DRAM-less controller and incorporates HMB (Host Memory Buffer) high-speed caching technology. The drive is available in two capacity variants: 1TB and 2TB.
When it comes to performance, the 2TB model boasts impressive sequential read and write speeds, reaching up to 7250MB/s and 6450MB/s, respectively. The 1TB version is no slouch either, with sequential read speeds of up to 7150MB/s and sequential write speeds matching those of the 2TB model at 6450MB/s. In terms of random performance, the 2TB drive delivers up to 850K IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) for random reads and 1200K IOPS for random writes. Meanwhile, the 1TB version offers up to 700K IOPS for random reads and 1100K IOPS for random writes.
Regarding energy efficiency, this product marks a significant improvement, achieving up to a 38% enhancement over its predecessor, the 990 PRO. The Samsung 990 comes with a 3-year warranty, covering 400TBW (Total Bytes Written) per TB of capacity. Since July 14, the drive has been gradually made available on the global market. As for pricing, the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 1TB version stands at $269.99 (approximately 1,830 RMB), while the 2TB version is priced at $529.99 (approximately 3,590 RMB).
