Recently, DJI initiated legal proceedings against Insta360 Innovation at the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court, centering on six disputes over patent ownership. The case allegedly involves several former key R&D staff members from DJI, with the patents at the heart of the dispute pertaining to crucial drone technologies, such as flight control systems. DJI has asserted that these patents represent innovations developed by their ex-employees within a year of leaving the company, building upon their prior work responsibilities.
In response, Liu Jingkang, the CEO of Insta360 Innovation, clarified that the patents in question are entirely the product of Insta360's internal ingenuity and independent innovation. He revealed that the creative idea behind the 'building jump flight' patent for flight control originated from his own vision. Liu further explained that the inventors' names were initially withheld to postpone the revelation of the technical team's composition. He also suggested that DJI's legal move is motivated by concerns over potential market share loss and highlighted that certain DJI products also fall under the purview of Insta360's patent protections.
Despite this, Liu emphasized that Insta360 has prioritized R&D investment, achieving market expansion over the past year through distinct and innovative approaches. He stated that, barring necessity, Insta360 would refrain from readily employing patent litigation as a strategic tool and would instead allow the legal process to unfold naturally, channeling the majority of its resources into the development of new products. In closing, Liu underscored the significance of respecting intellectual property rights, factual accuracy, and the rule of law. He expressed a stance of not succumbing to the fear of legal challenges and instead focusing on market growth through continuous innovation.
