Starting March 2026, Google intends to authenticate the identities of all developers distributing apps on Android devices, with the objective of mitigating risks associated with malware proliferation, financial fraud, and data theft. This mandate requires developers to provide genuine information, while the Android platform will continue to remain open, enabling developers to distribute apps via alternative app stores or sideloading. Prior to full implementation, Google will introduce a trial system in October 2025 to gather feedback from the developer community. In September 2026, Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will pioneer this policy, with global adoption anticipated by 2027. Recognizing the unique needs of students and hobbyist developers, Google will offer specialized account types. This initiative is poised to have substantial implications for the Android app ecosystem and app distribution landscape.
