Recently, the pace of project development in Europe by top players in the lithium-ion battery industry chain has markedly quickened. CATL has initiated production at its battery cell factory in Hungary. Meanwhile, Gotion High-Tech has forged a joint venture with a Volkswagen-linked entity to construct battery plants in Spain and Slovakia. Additionally, Yutong Energy has significantly ramped up its investment in the Spanish venture.

This flurry of factory construction activities in Europe is propelled by two main factors. Firstly, the enforcement of EU regulations, including the Batteries and Waste Batteries Regulation and the Net-Zero Industry Act, coupled with industry standards like carbon footprint assessments and battery passports, is urging the lithium-ion battery industry chain to expedite its localized deployment in Europe. Secondly, the swift growth of the European power battery and energy storage markets is opening up substantial demand avenues for fresh production capacities.
