Microsoft is accelerating the cleanup of outdated technical components in the Windows operating system by deciding to discontinue early a long-standing legacy feature built into the traditional 'Windows Media Player' or older media players in Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and future 26H2. Previously, Microsoft completely removed the WMIC tool through the cumulative update KB5124008 in the September 2026 Windows 11 update. This tool had only been available as an 'on-demand' download feature in Windows 11 since 2022 and will now be removed from the list of optional features in the future. Additionally, Microsoft will also disable the previously mandatory Microsoft 365 companion apps—People, Files, and Calendar—on December 16, 2026, though they will not be automatically uninstalled; users will need to delete them manually.
